(TDLR. The Headlines: On Monday, Jeremy is running a solstice run from Ripley at 7pm. On Tuesday, we have intervals at Derwent Road at both 6pm and 7pm, and on Thursday we run the supermarkets. There are no championship races this weekend, but I’ve included a few bits about up and coming events, date changes, and a plea to help our friends in Ripon. Oh yes, and a particularly cheerful wise word finishes us off for the week…)
Evenin’,
Well, it was lovely to see so many of you come to the drinks social at the Starling Bar last night and we can only apologise to those who got dragged in Revolution de Cuba last night. The trauma will not easily be forgotten. Anyway, one can always tell when we’ve had a night out. Nidd Valley House is in a real old state. This morning we had to spend ages binning uneaten kebabs, wiping garlic mayo off the work surfaces and picking up discarded clothing left on the grand staircase. And no one has seen Captain Dazzler since we last saw him staggering off with half a bottle of rum and a pair of maracas. It’s quite the worry, to be honest. So while we look for him, you can have a look at the results from the week that was.
Results from the Week That Was…
It’s a reasonably quiet week results-wise but, before we get cracking, the apology of the week this week goes to none other than Kev Clark who emailed in to say I missed out his result from the Carlisle Half Marathon last week. Well, Kevin finished the race in a spectacular 1:29.06 so he gets extra pudding tonight for a result like that. As an aside, I only know about the results if people send them in to me… race organisers don’t send them in automatically. Yes, I know I have often been compared to Mystic Meg (both on the screen and off) but I’m not a mind reader so if you would like your name in print then you need to let me know!
Right, to the results from this week and the only offering we have for you are the results from Conyngham Hall Parkrun, which was the final race in the 2022-23 cross-country season. And cross-country it was with enough mud, hills and gnarly roots to keep everybody happy. And the results make some long reading, so I hope you’re sitting comfortably. Up front, we had Captain Dazzler (20.05), with Kev Clark (21.41), Andy Iddon (22.05) behind and with juniors Sam Crebbin (22.19) and Josh Bryer (22.21) sandwiching Nigel Scaife (22.19) in at the finish. Laura Francis (23.33) finished first for the ladies, and was soon joined by Simon Cocker (23.53), Nick Crebbin (24.19), Babs (24.20) and Richard Evans (25.21). Chandra Shekar (26.12) snuck in just ahead of Chris Morris (26.13), and then we had only a few seconds to get ready to celebrate the results from Fiona Deacon (26.35), junior Smiti Chandrashekar (26.50), Jeremy Leggings (27.05), Kev Nicholas (27.31) and Sue Ball (27.40). This is taking ages, just popping to the loo. Back in a mo…
… right back with you. Now where was I? Ah yeah, so junior Fraser Dobinson (27.41), was just ahead of Karen Mills (27.54) as she celebrated her one hundredth parkrun (with cake, too!), while junior Jess Beaumont (28.17) was showing Vicky Thomas (28.22), Ewa Scott (28.25), Nadene Wilkinson (28.29), Sarah Lofthouse (28.31) and Reb Ventress (28.34) how it was done. Mike Deacon (28.48) was on top form, and we are delighted to see he was joined by junior Preeti Chandrashekar (29.03), Emily Wighton (29.11) and other junior Tobi Dolman (29.12). Tobi managed to beat his mother Katharine (29.16) – well done, Tobester! – and it wasn’t long until we saw Moira McTague (30.57) and Guy Parker (30.58) get to the line. Dave Seaman (31.17) was the next to show, with Steve Newton (31.21), Iain Scott (31.31), Steve Newbould (32.05) and Marcos Montana (32.44) finishing soon after. Our very own famous five concluded proceedings for us, so let’s have a big shout for the happy Sarah Chalmers (33.26) – I mean, she looked REALLY happy yesterday -, Suzy Rhodes (33.56), Sylvia Morten (35.41), Graham Hyde (36.45) and tail walker Jane Evans (59.37).
Also a quick note of thanks to all the Nidds who turned up and offered their support to marshal yesterday, especially Emma Kicks who volunteered as a timekeeper. Now Emma doesn’t want me to mention that she was AWOL at the start of the run and could not be found, meaning that the run started late. So we won’t mention that.
In other parkrun news, the Robinsons were tossing their cabers up at Holyrood parkrun in Edinburgh, Jim Cook was at the sparky-sounding Cinder Track parkrun in Whitby, Adam Kirk was at Armley (I’m guessing the parkrun not the HMP, but I can’t be too sure. It’s always the quiet ones), Martin Luxton was at Sedgefield, John Mallet was in Selby (not something you want to say too often if you can help it, John), Jess Webster was in Keswick, and Debbie Gibson was doubtlessly chewing someone’s ear off at Belton Park. As ever, the usual faces also popped up at Harrogate and Fountains. All the results here: https://tinyurl.com/47nsmxd6.
Keep me updated. Signed, sealed, delivered I’m yours: samfugill@gmail.com.
The Fixtures for the Week Ahead
On Monday, Jeremy Leggings will be running a head-torch trail run round Cayton Gill to mark the spring equinox. It’ll be about eight miles and you’ll need your trail shoes on, but the pace will be steady and all will be welcome. Meet at the carpark at Ripley and be good to go by 7pm. It’ll be a great run out, so do try and get there if you can.
On Tuesday, we have some more intervals for you and this week we are back at Derwent Road. Meet at the club for either 6pm or 7pm for a jog down to the start, where the main sessions will begin at quarter past the hour. Sarah Staiano teams up with Rachael Prince to be your hosts for the 6pm session, while Cath Barber and Sarah Chalmers will be taking you through the motions for the 7pm session. It’s all good training for speed in the summer race season and, you never know, you might even enjoy yourself.
Well, it’s high time we ran the supermarket sweep so this will be our run on Thursday. Meet at the Hockey Club and be good to run for 7pm. We’ll head out along the side of the railway to ASDA, up through town and past Waitrose to the Stray. You can tack straight round the Stray to the showground and Sainsbury’s, or you can extend down Leeds Road and M&S before you get to the showground. From there, head over to Morrisons before cutting back into Starbeck and up to the club. We’ll be regrouping in the bar afterwards for a quick drink and a chat, so it would be great if you fancied coming to join us.
Further Ahead & Booking Now Open
On Sat 01 Apr 2023, we continue the fell running campaign with a trip to race the Pendle Fell Race. It’s only 4.5 miles, but it looks like it should be a bit of a laugh and with some climbing and descending to put those legs through their paces. Entry is between £5 – £7, depending on whether you are an FRA member, and you can find more details here: https://tinyurl.com/ym3br5y5.
On Easter Sunday (09 Apr 2023), we’ve got the Guisley Gallop. This 10k race appears in our road championship, and will be the perfect chance to burn off all of the chocolate that you’ll have had for your breakfast. Entry is £18 but it’s a lovely scenic run out and a great chance to support another local running club. All the details here: https://tinyurl.com/mr4yjydr.
Evening League: Entries now Open!
Now this is the kind of thing that I can really get it up for. This is our summer evening race league in which we go into friendly battle with the other running clubs in the area over a series of five evening races. Contrary to what you might think or have been told, every runner counts and the more points then all the better. So get your shoes on and get involved. #niddvalleyneedsyou.
Entry is £20 but if Nidd Valley members use the code NIDD23, then they will get discounted entry of £16. This is funded by the club to encourage as much participation as ever, but please do not share this code with others outside the club (we’ll find them out anyway, and embarrass them). Entry details are here: https://tinyurl.com/86sc49rc.
Charlesworth Chase: Date Change
For those of you who want to combine the heady delights of fell running with morning drinking, then the Charlesworth Chase will be the fell race for you. Run up and down Simon’s Seat from Appletreewick and have to finish a pint in order to cross the line. Thrilling stuff. Anyway, the race will be on Sat 20 May 2023, and not Sun 21 May 2023 as previously advertised. Please amend your diaries, running plans and drinking schedules accordingly. This is a handy change, as it’ll mean you’ll be able to run in the….
Ripon 10: 21 May 2023
You’ll have seen on all of the socials that this race is struggling for entrants and there is a real prospect of it not taking place at all. Apart from the right bind it would cause for us in the Planning Department at NVH as this is a race in our road championships, but it would be a loss in the local race calendar and a blow to our friends at the ever-lovely Ripon Runners. If you’re free and fancy a run out, then please get involved: https://tinyurl.com/2upe2rze.
Tee-shirts
Sylvia is looking to see if there is sufficient demand for a new tee-shirt order in club colours. Short sleeved tees are £27 and long sleeved are £30.60 and we need a minimum order of ten to go ahead. If you are interested in a new tee shirt (and I promise that you will look just smashing), then please email Sylvia directly: sylviamorten1@gmail.com by the end of March.
Word to the Wise
We end the week with a wise questions from none other than the ever-happy and positive Sarah Chalmers as she completed the Conyngham Hall Parkrun yesterday.
“Why do people do this every single week? It’s awful!” – Sarah Chalmers, radiating positivity and a can-do attitude. As per.
So from Chuckles, from me, and from everyone here at NVH, have a great week. See you soon.
