Thirsk 10
Those club members who love the flat tarmac were chomping at the bit for this one – the race had to be rescheduled due to the early spring snow, so the almost perfect running conditions last Sunday was a welcome relief for everyone taking part. The flat and (for some) fast course was a delightful trot through the back lanes and countryside in and around Thirsk. The only nasty bit of the course was the out and back bit at about 7 miles where you could see the frontrunners come past you in the opposite direction! As this was a club championship race, we had a good turn out once again.

Some great times there, I’m sure you all agree!

Manchester Marathon
Jonny Forster got himself a new PB at Manchester, finishing in 4:20:54 – well done Jonny, good effort! Also running at Manchester was John Beaumont and he finished in a very tidy 3:35:01, while Adam Kirk made his marathon debut last weekend and put in a storming performance to achieve an outstanding time of 2:55:22! I don’t think we need to mention anything more about this – running 26.2 miles is an achievement in itself but to do it in under 3 hours (well under!) is something else.

Rotterdam Marathon
This is another flat and potentially fast marathon course, so no doubt it attracts vast numbers of runners searching for that elusive marathon PB. Emma David and hubby Mark were in Holland for this event, with Mark taking part in the quarter marathon (just over 10k) and finishing in 48:54. Emma went for the full mashings and completed the marathon in 3:55:54. Excellent work!

Parkrun – Sat 7th April
Matt Wilkinson got himself a new PB of 17:45, and finished in 1st place at Harrogate. At Woodhouse Moor, Steve Newton also bagged himself a new PB with a time of 24:42.

Parkrun – Saturday 14th April
With about 70 Nidd Valley runners attending yesterday’s event at Fountains Abbey, the total number of runners was well above 500. This made for an exciting Saturday morning jaunt, with club championship points to be earned and the club’s new Zip to Zoomer members graduating. The start line was awash in a sea of Nidd vests and associated colours, and we even got a special mention in the pre-race brief! Everyone performed really well and here are the PB’s:

Nigel SCAIFE 00:19:28
Brian HAINSWORTH 00:19:30
Carol MORGAN 00:20:20
James COOK 00:20:53
Mike BENSON 00:23:29
Robert HILL 00:25:08
Lynsey BARRACLOUGH 00:26:37
Rosemary THOMPSON 00:28:08

Sarah CHALMERS 00:31:36
Jessica BEAUMONT 00:32:44

The recent group of Zip to Zoomers also graduated at Fountains:

Vickie Bailey, Katie Sawnnie, Lianne Coiley, Jill Hornsby , Faith Hamond, Lisa Morton, Lorna Simpson, Katy Jarrett, Emily Crankshaw, Laura Gibson, Gayle Wise, Beth Pears, Lisa Storey, Christine Parker, Emma Ralston, Joanne Waring, Penelope Tiffney, and Carol Coates – massive well done to you all!

At Harrogate, Jeremy Scott ran his 200th parkrun, while Mark Armstrong – hopefully making a speedy recovery from injury, ran his 100th. Also running her 100th was Colleen Gruenwald.

Zip to Zoom Graduation Run 14th April 2018

Blubberhouses 25
Running 25 miles is enough of a challenge for anyone, but chuck in some mud, unpredictable spring weather and some massive hills, it becomes a huge challenge. Nidd had six intrepid hill lovers take part in this event last weekend but unfortunately only five managed to finish – Graham Hyde was struggling by the time he got to the 14 mile checkpoint at Storiths, and he very sensibly decided to end his race there. Better luck next time Graham – move forward from this experience and focus on your next challenge!

Brain Hainsworth, Phil Ventress, and Mike Benson all got PB’s and finished around 5:44, Jeff Walker in 6:33, and Fiona Robinson in 7:19.

The next event like this organised by Nidderdale LDWA is the Wensleydale Wedge in November. It’s £8 to enter, an absolute bargain.

Baildon Boundary Way
This half marathon distance multi terrain event conveniently starts from Baildon and has plenty to offer in regards to mud and hills. Phil Robinson and son Alex took part in this event, and it was Alex’s first crack at this distance. He managed and impressive 30th place overall out of 337 runners, finishing in a time of 1hr 44 mins. Phil crossed the line in 169th place, with a time of 2hrs 11 mins.
