Hi everyone
Emma is away this weekend supporting Carol Morgan on her Wainwright’s attempt (214 peaks and 36000m of climb!!!)– the record set just a week or so ago was just under 6 days, maybe Carol will set a new one, we hope so. Wishing her all the best on this amazing undertaking and well done to Emma too for stepping up to help.
So it’s on my list of jobs to keep you informed of all that’s going on – let’s have a look at what we have in store in the Nidd Valley diary this week.
Tuesday – Intervals. 7pm. Hockey Club fields.
Coach Darren from England Athletics has sent me the session for Tuesday evening. Now I appreciate there is a very important football match on so many of you (like Mr SS) might prefer to watch that – but if you do want to come along and stick to your training plan, I will be starting the warm up at 7pm on Tuesday in the fields behind the hockey club. Even if you do watch the football, you can still just about make it providing there’s no extra time of course!
The main session is 2 x (5×3) minute efforts this time, so you are progressing to hold that 10k pace for a little longer this week.
Give these sessions a try. You will see benefits in just a few weeks. Everyone welcome.
Thursday – club run routes and a birthday.
For a road option, I’d like to propose route 3 – Showground route – mainly because on Sunday it is Harrrogate 10k so it would be a good chance to familiarise yourself with the start and finish and if anyone wants to and we can take a slight detour and you can see that lovely last climb before the race! Here is the route – Route 3: Showground 7.39m view map/route Kingsley Drive, Morrisons, Freeman’s Corner, Sainsbury’s, Showground, Hookstone Drive, Leeds Road, Stray, York Place, Claro Road. To cut short, from Hookstone Drive return along Oatlands Drive, Slingsby Walk, Hospital and Claro Road.
Off road alternative – Route 13 and the next in order – is Nidd Gorge if anyone prefers that one instead. view map/route
A quick reminder to leaders, keep your group on pace and where possible lead from the back – or at least have a back marker or muster for your group. It can be difficult leading groups especially now we have larger ones heading out, last week was tricky as we were navigating route as well. Sometimes people dip out for various reasons but it is important to make sure that those falling behind have a buddy and don’t feel compelled to run uncomfortably fast.
Finally for Thursday, we have a Nidd Valley birthday! Ewa Scott has a special birthday this coming weekend and has asked me to let everyone coming along on Thursday know that she will be celebrating after the club run by bringing Birthday cake. The hockey club is apparently very busy so Ewa will celebrate outside in the car park for anyone that wants to join her. Thanks for inviting us Ewa and Happy Birthday for the weekend.
Pacing groups for the run – (suggested).
Group 1 – 8-8.30 min miles
Group 2 – 8.30 – 9 min miles
Group 3 – 9 – 9.30 min miles
Group 4- 9.30-10 min miles
Group 5- 10.30 – 11 min miles
Group 6 – 11-12 min miles
Sunday – Harrogate 10k – another for the road champs.
Good luck to all of you racing. I am away this weekend so will miss it, I love a race and I am especially devastated to miss one on home territory! Captain Kevin will be there though to cheer you home.
Another reminder to please wear your Nidd colours (vest or t shirt) if you want this to count towards your road champ points. If you need a vest, head to Up and Running where they should be available for a cash payment of £10 or £15.
There are still places left for this race and the transfer deadline is Monday.
Important! Please don’t run under another person’s name or use their number without following the transfer process for this or any other race. It is against UKA guidelines and if you are caught you will be disqualified. If you are taking another person’s number then please transfer via the race instructions and before the transfer deadline.
HDSRL – Evening League – Please enter!
I know I keep on at you all about this, but if you have been putting off buying your evening league number, please do it this week! It’s £15 for 2 in person races (both count towards the road champs) and lots of virtual races, I hope you will try those too. You get points for the Evening League competition for every race you do.
Enter right now! Harrogate District Summer Race League 2021 – RaceBest

Good luck to everyone running laps of Bramham Park this weekend. Hope it stays dry and not too hot for you. Good luck to those first time campers as well 😉
Finally some thanks and congratulations for the past week – it has been busy!
Cleveland Way Relays – Thanks to Phil V for organising last week’s Cleveland Way relay and thanks from me to Sarah C for letting me run with her on her “mountainous” section! It was great fun. Well done everyone who took part. A great club event.
Otley 10m – It doesn’t get any easier, more huge hills but always a great race. Well done Kevin Clark who got a new speedy 10m PB over those hills (1.05.46) – must have been the Nidd Vest superpowers Kevin! And special mention to Janet Carling who ran her first race back for the club “for years” (her words)- she predicted her time to be 1.40 and she wasn’t far off in 1.39.23, even better Janet – congratulations, I hope you will race with us again soon. Thanks to everyone who came out to support too. Great efforts all round team Nidd, proud of you all!
Kettlewell fell race – Well done to all of you that took part in this one- it isn’t in the fell champs but good on you for getting out there regardless.
Think that’s all – I am bound to have missed something or someone though so sorry if I have.
Have a fabulous week and I’m sure I will see lots of you at club.
Captain Sarah 😊
