(TLDR. For those short of time…. On Monday evening, Jeremy is leading a social run from Ripley. Your club runs this week are the Greenway and the gorge, with an added option of intervals on Tuesday. Tholthorpe 10k on Sunday is the next in the road championships and entries close soon).
Morning team,
It’s all go at Nidd Valley House this morning as breakfast is in full swing. His Lordship is having a full English with Mike and Martin. He does enjoy popping a hot sausage in his mouth. Captain Sarah is on the granola, and Captain Dazzler is asking if anyone will help peel his banana. We’ve told Fingers that he can’t have pop tarts again, so he’s had to settle for coco pops. Dave is on the toast and marmalade, Sarah and Jane are on the croissants, and Sylvia is at the back door with a black coffee and a fag. So while I go and see what mess they’ve made and tackle to washing up, I’ll leave you to plan your week ahead
The Week Ahead
Hot off the press! On Monday evening, Jeremy Scott will be leading a steady run from Ripley round Brearton. It’s about 10k and very much a steady and social run out. All welcome, obviously. Meet at the car park at Ripley and be good to go for 6.45pm.
We’ve got a right old mixed bag on Tuesday, so the choice is yours. Emma Kicks will be teaming up with Rachael Price to offer another interval session. The session and the location are closely guarded and classified secrets, so if you want to take part you need to be at the Hockey Club and good to go for 7pm.
If intervals aren’t your bag, then there will also be a club run on Tuesday night. And I can think of no finer a club run than a jaunt up the Greenway. Be good to leave the club at 7pm and head out over the iron bridge and follow the cycle track up to Bilton Crossing and then up to the bridge at Killinghall. You can return to Knock Mill via the fields or the road, and then head back to the club from there.
We’ve got another club run on Thursday evening (yes, yes, I know that we are good to you) and, if you’ve never been taken up the gorge, then you’re in for a real treat. We’ll leave the club at 7pm and head over the iron bridge and head towards the viaduct. Peel right off the Greenway and head over the fields and into the gorge. You can come back via the track past the Gardener’s Arms, or run the full length and come back along the Beryl Burton cycle track. Afterwards, we’ll reconvene in the bar for a pint and a natter. It’ll be lovely to see you.
For a bit of silliness on Friday, we’re having a time trial in Pateley Bridge. Meet at the large carpark on the south side of the bridge for 6.30pm. The challenge will be to run up through Bewerley and up the challenging climb all the way to the Coldstones Cut. It’s 5k and a just over 1000ft of climb. I’ll have the car and so can take warm clothes up for you, and also give people lifts back to the Pateley where a trip to the chip shop or the pub will be the order of the day. Let me know if you’re coming and I’ll keep an eye out for you.
The weekend gives you the chance to scratch another notch in the bedpost of the road championships. The Tholthorpe 10k on Sunday is a sharp and fast course, so there are chances for PBs as well as championship points. You’ll need to pre-enter, and entries close on Thursday morning. Results
All very quiet on the racing front here at Nidd Valley House this week, so I haven’t got any race results for you. However, we’re thrilled to report that Kevin Nicholas has completed his Lands End to John O’Groats cycle challenge. He completed the 1,024 miles (56,059ft of climb, too, if you’re taking notes) in just 12 days. He’s back at Nidd Valley House, walking like John Wayne and wincing each time he has to use the stairs, but it’s lovely to have him back with us. Well done, Kev.
In parkrun news, we’ve had runners at Woodhouse Moor, Cannon Hill, Workington, New Warwick, Chevin Forest, Rothay Park, Conygham Hall, Harrogate and Fountains Abbey. Read all about it: https://tinyurl.com/4cbrfjde.
Oh, STOP PRESS! News just in at the Racing Department at Nidd Valley House. Kevin Clark took part in the Stanhope 10 Mile Race yesterday. The official results haven’t yet filtered down from County Durham yet, but we’ll hopefully have them to you for next week. For now, I can tell you from a quick nosey at Kevin’s Strava that he finished the run in about 1:12.39 (and that’s when stopping to take photos on the course, too).
Walked out this morning, I don’t believe what I saw / Hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore / Seems I’m not alone at being alone / Hundred billion castaways, looking for a home: samfugill@gmail.com.
Apology of the Week
This week’s apology goes to Captain Sarah. When I was busy singing Bab’s praises for being the third lady to finish the Sessay Swift, I neglected to tell you that Sarah clinched the prize for 2nd FV40. Sarah would also like me to big it up for Fiona Deacon who nabbed 4th FV50, narrowly missing out on a podium spot. Well done to them both.
Further Ahead & Booking Now Open
On Thursday 06 Sep 2022, we have our fish and chip run in Knaresborough. I know, crag rat territory. #turfwars. Anyway, please have a look at Captain Sarah’s email and make sure you’ve placed your order by teatime next Tuesday.
On Sunday 11 Sep 2022, we’ve got the Vale of York half marathon. Never mind the fact that it’s in Selby (can’t be helped), as this is your chance to grab some club championship points. It’s a pre-entry affair and is selling it fast, so I wouldn’t hang around if you want in on the action: https://tinyurl.com/2s3szy2m.
The week after, we’ve got the all important Mob Match against the Knaresborough Striders on Sunday 18 Sep 2022 at the Beckbusters 10k. We’ve got Captains Dazzler and Sarah on performance related pay for this, and they’re anxious that every runner turns up and takes part in what will be a tough fight at Bishop Monkton: https://tinyurl.com/knu6s9b2.
Word to the Wise
This week’s words of wisdom come from our very own Sarah Staiano and Jane Evans. Out on a run this weekend, Sarah was telling Jane the little-known fact that our treasurer, Sylvia, used to be a ballet dancer.
Sarah: “So, yeah, Sylvia used to be a ballet dancer you know…”
Jane: “What? A belly dancer?”
Sarah: “No, a ballet dancer…”
So while she adjusts her nipple tassels, I best sign off. Have a great week.
