Tell us your name. Dave Seaman
How and when did you first start running? The first “distance” running I remember is when I was 10 and my teacher marked out a 1 furlong course around the playground. We ran 8 laps to make a mile. Later I discovered that cross-country was the one sport that I was (relatively) any good at, mainly because the real sportsmen wanted to play soccer or rugby.
What brought you to Nidd Valley? I’d just decided to take up running again after a 7 year break and was offered a number in the Great North by a friend. The night before I had a call from someone (Sue Threadgold perhaps?) asking if I would like a seat on the Nidd Valley bus (organised for many years by Alan Harby) and, since I had only a vague plan as to how I was going to drive there and back, gladly accepted. Alan gave me a membership form on the bus on the way back!
When did you join Nidd Valley? October 2000
What is your favourite running music? Genre or specific tracks? I don’t see the point of listening to music through earphones while running. I’d sooner be aware of the sounds of nature if out in the country (which is where I prefer to run) and think it’s dangerous to block out the sound of traffic if on road.
What is your favourite food before and after running? I usually have a big bowl of porridge when I’m running in the morning but just have an orange and some Greek yoghurt or maybe a biscuit or 2 at tea time before an evening run. After running, a bag of crisps and a bottle or two of Black Sheep! (At least on Thursdays)
What is your best running tip that you would like to share with us? Push yourself but not to the point that it ceases to be enjoyable.
What is your proudest moment in your running career? I can’t think of one particular moment but I am quite proud of the fact that I did my first marathon at the age of 55 and got within my target of 4 hours by 7 seconds and that I did 5 more up to the age of 62, always staying under 4 hours
What are your running goals? I like to think that, like my hero Alan Harby, I’ll still be running at 80.
What event are you training for at the moment? I’ve never followed a training programme for a particular event, apart from throwing in a few longer runs before a marathon
