Weekly Update: Philippa never seems to stop running, Paul makes a return to racing, and the Evening League gets going…

Hi all –

Results

Well, my oh my, what a busy bunch of running bees everyone has been. The statisticians here at Nidd Valley House have barely had time for their tea break. Here goes.

First off the blocks was Philippa Moorse with the Tadcaster Triathlon on Monday. Starting with a dip and a 400m swin, Philippa then got in the saddle for a 14k bike ride, before a quick 7k run to bring proceedings to a close. Philippa finished 70th out of 142 women, so an excellent effort all round.

The Evening League got off to a flying start at Harrogate on Tuesday, with Matt Wilkinson (37:37) just holding Jamie Dilasser (37:44) at bay to take first place. Emma Dooley was first lady for the club in a spectacular (47:16). 37 Nidds rose to the occasion – sorry, but with all the will in the world I can’t bring myself to sit and type out 37 results – and everyone put in a top-drawer performance. Full results here: http://www.harrogate-league.org.uk/, and we look forward to seeing you for the next race hosted by the Dragons at Yeadon on 21 May 2015.

Aimi Blueman headed North West to tackle the last in the Lakeland Series with the Kentmere 17k Challenge. Aimi thoroughly impressed everyone with a finishing time of 2:21 for the demanding (I don’t even need to say undulating) course. Well done.

Closer to home, the Leeds Half Marathon was the setting to some tremendous times. Matt Wilkinson (does this man ever stop running?) led the team home in 1:24:32, followed by Martin Lofthouse in 1:28:20 and Paul Geary, making a return to racing, in 1:38:23. Not being competitive or anything, but this puts Paul 69 seconds ahead of my PB. I’m watching you, Paul. Watching you very closely. Jane Hill was next over the line for Nidd Valley in a commendable 2:13:24, while Michelle Dinsdale completed her first half marathon in 2:22:14. Well done all.

Phil and Alex Robinson (Alex being one of the rising stars of NVRR Juniors) completed the Malhamdale challenge, opting for 9m route, finishing in an impressive 1:59. Alex was fighting fit and training hard in preparation for his sponsored walk of Hadrian’s Wall in a few weeks, so stand by for a sponsor form. Philippa Moorse and Annie Burns gritted their teeth, despite the abysmal weather, and completed the full 22m course in a thoroughly commendable 5:45.

As if Philippa hadn’t done enough running this week, she was out in full force for the Nidderdale Walk – completing the 20m course through the Nidd Valley. Sarah Chalmers and Debbie Gibson tackled the 10m route, and a host of other Nidds also got in on the action, including Amie and Jean. Whoever you are, and however many miles you travelled – well done!

I’m feeling remarkably proud of myself as no-one has given me the dreaded shoulder-tap and asked why I didn’t include their results last week. For the sake of my sanity and club harmony, please keep my updated: chair@niddvalleyroadrunners.co.uk.

The Week Ahead

  • Tuesday: Once a fell runner pops, they just can’t stop. It’s number 4 in the Fell Championships, and we’ll be heading off the race the Jack Bloor, a cheeky 5 mile race near Ilkley. The race starts at 7.15pm. and entry is an absolute steal at only £5. As ever, you can badger Fell Running Phil, and there are more details here: http://www.jackbloor.co.uk/.
  • Tuesday: For those who find fell running  as attractive as, well, throwing yourself up and down the side of a mountain, there’ll be a usual club run. Meet at the Hockey Club at 7pm.
  • Thursday: Usual club from the Hockey Club at 7pm, followed by a couple of pints and a bag of crisps in the bar, listening to the dulcet tones of people talking about the comparative merits of compression socks.
  • Saturday: Bloomin’ ‘eck, the fell runners are at it again with the Charlesworth Chase. Cracking little race, this: another 5 mile chase up and down Simon’s Seat, made all the better by the fact that you have to neck a pint of Yorkshire bitter at the end of race before you cross the finish line (lager boys clearly need not apply). A lunch of soup is included in the bargain price of £6. I did it last year. Loved it. Again, more details here: http://fellrunner.org.uk/races.php?id=3475.
  • Sunday: It’s the ever-popular Ripon 10. I’m not sure if there are still places or not, although I have seen people online touting unused numbers and such like. Details here: http://www.riponrunners.org.uk/ripon-10-mile/.

Bed Race: Help Needed

The bed race edges ever closer, and our two teams are out training hard. They train every Thursday night, and would love it if you went down to run with them, shout words of encouragement, and weep helplessly with laughter as they attempt the notorious river crossing.

The Lions are also on the lookout for any additional marshals. If you can help, please contact John Dickinson from the Lions on lionbedrace@hotmail.co.uk. He would love to hear from you.

Reminder to both teams racing: you need to still provide a marshal per bed, and let John know when you have done this as they’ll need to attend a safety briefing.

Committee Meeting

We’re having the next committee meeting on Wednesday 20 May 2015. By which I mean we’ll drink tea, eat all the biscuits in Dave’s house, and panic about how the Guy Fawkes Race is bearing down on us at an alarming rate. If there is anything you’d like discussed, started, changed, stopped, or considered, then please let me know. My email: chair@niddvalleyroadrunners.co.uk.
